The Semi Finals were played as 7 Sets best of 3 x 501. The Grand Final was to be played as 7 Sets best of 3 x 501 with a lot of great darts
The Winners to the last 8 were;
Kyle Anderson - Neil Hambrow - Kerry Whear - Beau Anderson - Kim Lewis - Lindsay Haji Ali
Dave Methven and Brad Austen. Some could say the usual suspects but a very good final 8
The Quarter Finals
Kyle Anderson (29.24) lost to Neil Hambrow (30.67) 2 legs to 6. Neil played a very high level of darts to which Kyle had no answer
Kerry Whear (27.09) lost Beau Anderson (28.31) 5 legs to 6 - This was a great game and produced the quality darts which reflected this. Kerry had his chances but Beau did enough to get through.
Kim Lewis (26-20) beat Lindsay Haji Ali (27.04) in another high quality game 6 legs to 5. Lindsay let Kim get away to a 4 to 1 lead but fought back to 4 all. It was anyone's game after that but Lindsay could not hold Kim out in the end, yet another very good game of darts.
Dave Methven (26.99) beat Brad Austen (27.20) 6 legs to 5. Brad and Dave fought tooth and nail with Brad getting to a 5 to 4 lead but could not get over the line. Dave produced a great 14 dart last leg to get into the Semi Finals.
The Semi Finals
Neil Hambrow (27.76) lost to Beau Anderson (28.92) - 3 Sets to 4. This was a high quality game and on form either of these players were the likely winner of the event. Beau got out to a 3 sets to 1 lead but Neil came back to 3 all. The 1st leg of the 4th Set provided a great spectacle; Beau commenced with back to back 180's then got the 60 but ended up with a 10 darter. Neil had 3 x 140's on the trot in the same leg. Sets went (2-0, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 2-1, 2-0, 1-2). Overall it was a very good game and was enjoyed by the crown on hand.
Kim Lewis (27.06) beat Dave Methven (26-29) - 4 Sets to 2 - This was a contest in two parts, Dave won the opening two sets but was not able to maintain his good form. Kim won the next four sets and made it through to another Grand Final. The Sets went (1-2, 1-2, 2-1, 2-1 2-0, 2-1). Dave played a good game but Kim as usual was able to get through and he did it in style by pegging 170 to win the match, his 2nd 170 for the day.
The Grand Final
Beau Anderson (26.34) beat Kim Lewis (26.92) - 5 Sets to 2 - The result seems a bit harsh but Kim was in there swinging trying his best. Whatever Kim did Beau had the answer. 1 set each became 4 to 1 down in favour of Beau and Kim was looking to the heavens for help. He got the 6th set but that was all he could do, Beau proved the steadier and is a deserved winner for 2008.
The Sets went (2-1, 0-2, 2-0, 2-0, 2-0, 1-2, 2-1).
A good days darts again and it will be on again in 2009
Most 180's: Beau Anderson with 19 (back to back in 2 separate legs during the day)
Highest Peg Main Event: Kim Lewis 170 - TWICE
A total of 90 x 180's were thrown on the day.
A total of 23 x 100 + Pegs were thrown on the day.
My very sincere thanks go to Wayne Wyatt the major sponsor of the event for his continued support. Bob Moorman and the staff at Posters Tavern for providing the venue and ongoing support of darts. Noel Millen and Fuel Technology for his support of the event and James Imray for the good work in the kitchen. Thanks also to Bob Grayson and Peter Cordell from the WADC who were present on the day and assisted where required.
This was a very good event with good support from those players who are not considered elite but willing to have a go. The Wyatt Cup is a well sponsored event but to maintain this level of support requires more of the "Elite" players fronting up to play on the day. We are fortunate to have a sponsor as passionate about darts as Wayne Wyatt, he needs to see your support of the event for him to continue his level of support and make the event grow bigger and better. Dart players everywhere need to pencil in Sunday 1st November 2009 for the next Wyatt Transport Open Men's Singles. A great day is guaranteed and remember - Make the cut and get at least your money back.
Until next year -
Yours in darts
